Westport needed a replacement for the ageing Buller Hospital. The new health centre covers 2,360 square metres and brings a full range of services into one building, including general practice, inpatient care, primary birthing, postnatal care, palliative care, urgent care and dental services.
The building carries complex services for a facility of its size, reflecting the breadth of care delivered from a single site in a town where the next alternative is a long drive away.
Delivery ran through two civil emergencies and the last Covid lockdown in New Zealand, with weeks lost to flooding on a site in one of the most flood exposed towns in the country. The centre was completed on time and on budget without incident.
