New Plymouth Airport needed a terminal that could handle growth and give arriving visitors a proper sense of the region. The new building holds capacity for 650,000 passengers a year, with retail and hospitality offerings alongside the terminal functions.
Puketapu Hāpu contributed to the design, so local identity and cultural narratives run through the building rather than sitting on it as decoration. The result works as a functional gateway while carrying the character of the place it serves.
Clelands was engaged as principal contractor, selected on its record in public buildings and its collaborative approach. The airport continued operating throughout construction, with all work carried out under the Civil Aviation Authority's Safety Management System. The terminal opened in 2020.
