Upper Hutt City Council set out to transform H2O Xtream, an aquatic facility that had served the community for more than 20 years. The work was delivered in phases, beginning at the early contractor involvement stage with buildability advice, cost modelling and practical input on sequencing, seismic strengthening and long term flexibility.
The upgrade expanded the main facility with a new junior leisure pool, an upgraded pool hall and changing rooms, a rebuilt hydroslide and tower, and an upgraded spa, sauna and steam room. Reception and office spaces were modernised, with new HVAC, filtration and electric heat pump infrastructure installed throughout.
Seismic strengthening uncovered significant damage in the roof over the main pool. The council chose full replacement, a substantial unplanned scope change that secured the building's long term value. The early involvement of the construction team meant that decision could be absorbed without derailing the programme. More than 75,000 hours were worked on site. The facility reopened in March 2025.
