The Department of Corrections needed three separate works packages completed at Invercargill Prison and the Community Corrections Service, all while the facilities remained fully operational.
The first refitted disused showers into staff toilets, circulation and servery spaces within the centre unit accommodation wing. That wing sits in the middle of the prison with no direct external access, so new openings were cut through deep solid concrete walls and every load of demolition material and new material was hand transported. The second replaced deteriorated walkway structure, cladding and steel mesh across three areas, with temporary security fencing established before removal began. The third replaced internal roof guttering at the Community Corrections Service under a tented scaffold, with ceiling services isolated and reinstated.
The prison ran at high muster throughout, with multiple daily escort movements continuing around the work. Construction zones were isolated and sequenced with custodial staff, and the site supervisor held keys and radio induction to move contractors through the facility. All three packages were completed in 2025.
