Kāinga Ora needed larger homes for larger whānau. This development in the Upper Hutt suburb of Trentham forms part of a national programme to build 1,700 homes with three or more bedrooms, lifting the supply of state owned housing suited to bigger family groups.
The work covers four sites and 16 units in total, a mix of standalone and semi detached homes, most of them two storey. Three homes within the development are purpose built for tenants with mobility challenges. Running four sites at once relied on close working with the Kāinga Ora delivery team and with local contractors and subcontractors engaged for the work.
The homes are designed for modern living, with open plan interiors and indoor outdoor flow to courtyards, decks and gardens. All meet the minimum Healthy Homes standard, and all are built to be warm, dry and straightforward to maintain. They were completed in August 2024.
